    The Babel soundtrack, released in 2006 by Concord Records, is a strikingly diverse and atmospheric collection curated for Alejandro González Iñárritu’s multi-layered film starring Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Gael García Bernal, Rinko Kikuchi, and Adriana Barraza. The score was composed primarily by Gustavo Santaolalla, who won the Academy Award for Best Original Score for his work, following his Oscar win the year before for Brokeback Mountain.

    Santaolalla’s signature use of the ronroco (a small Andean stringed instrument) creates a hauntingly intimate sound, especially in cues like “Tazarine” and “Babel.” These are woven together with an eclectic set of songs reflecting the film’s global settings — from Chieko’s Tokyo storyline underscored by tracks from Ryuichi Sakamoto, David Sylvian, and Susumu Yokota, to Moroccan desert atmospheres filled with North African folk and contemporary sounds, and Mexican sequences energized by artists like Los Tucanes de Tijuana and El Chapo de Sinaloa.
