The GoldenEye score and soundtrack, created for Martin Campbell’s 1995 James Bond revival starring Pierce Brosnan, is one of the most distinctive entries in the 007 musical canon. The main score was composed by French avant-garde artist Éric Serra, longtime collaborator of Luc Besson on films like Léon: The Professional and The Fifth Element. Serra’s electronic, industrial-tinged approach gave GoldenEye a unique texture, though it divided fans who were used to the lush orchestral sound of John Barry and, later, David Arnold. The soundtrack album, released by Virgin Records, features standout cues such as “The GoldenEye Overture” and “Ladies First,” blending synthesizers with occasional orchestral bursts, plus a reworked version of the “James Bond Theme” for the tank chase in St. Petersburg—famously re-scored by John Altman to give it more traditional Bond energy.

The title song, “GoldenEye,” was written by U2’s Bono and The Edge and performed with fierce glamour by Tina Turner, joining the pantheon of Bond themes alongside Shirley Bassey’s Goldfinger, Carly Simon’s Nobody Does It Better, and Adele’s Skyfall. In the end, the GoldenEye soundtrack became emblematic of the 1990s reinvention of the franchise, standing at the crossroads of classic spy orchestration and the experimental edge of electronic film scoring.
