V2

V2 Records, often referred to as "V2," is a British record label founded in 1996 by Richard Branson, the entrepreneur behind the Virgin Group. The label's name, V2, stands for "Virgin Two," signifying Branson's return to the music business after selling Virgin Records to EMI in 1992.

V2 Records has been known for its eclectic roster of artists and its focus on nurturing independent and alternative music. The label has released music across a variety of genres, including rock, electronic, indie, and more. Some notable artists who have been associated with V2 Records include:

  1. The White Stripes - The American rock duo released several albums through V2, including the critically acclaimed "White Blood Cells" and "Elephant."
  2. Moby - The electronic music pioneer released his successful album "Play" under V2 Records, which became a commercial and critical success.
  3. Stereophonics - The Welsh rock band released several albums with V2, achieving significant success in the UK and beyond.
  4. The Black Crowes - The Southern rock band released music under V2 Records after parting ways with their previous label.
  5. Paul Weller - The British singer-songwriter and former frontman of The Jam and The Style Council released solo work through V2.

V2 Records also expanded its operations globally, establishing offices in various countries and building a diverse international artist roster. The label focused on providing an alternative to the major record labels, offering more creative control and better deals for artists.

In 2007, V2 Records was acquired by Universal Music Group, and its operations were subsequently merged into other divisions within the company. Despite this, the V2 brand has remained active in some regions and continues to release music. The legacy of V2 Records is marked by its support of innovative and independent artists, as well as its contribution to the music industry during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
