The Village Callers

The Village Callers were a Chicano soul band from East Los Angeles, active in the 1960s and early 1970s. They were known for their eclectic mix of Latin rhythms, R&B, and jazz, which set them apart from other groups at the time. Their hit “Hector” became a regional favorite and is considered a classic in the genre of Latin soul. The band’s innovative sound was characterized by the use of traditional Mexican instruments and Afro-Cuban percussion, combined with a soulful vocal delivery.

Though they did not achieve widespread commercial success, The Village Callers were highly influential within the Chicano music scene and helped lay the groundwork for the development of Latin rock and soul. Their contributions are celebrated in East L.A.’s musical heritage, and they are remembered as pioneers who paved the way for future generations of Latino musicians.
