The Vapors
The Vapors are a British new wave band best known for their 1980 hit single "Turning Japanese," a quirky, high-energy track that became a defining anthem of the era. Formed in Guildford, Surrey, in 1978, the band initially consisted of David Fenton (vocals/guitar), Edward Bazalgette (lead guitar), Steve Smith (bass), and Howard Smith (drums). The Vapors' music combines punk-inspired energy with catchy melodies and clever lyrics, fitting well into the burgeoning new wave scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s.
The band released two albums, New Clear Days (1980) and Magnets (1981), before disbanding in 1982. While "Turning Japanese" remains their most famous track, their catalog includes other noteworthy songs like "News at Ten" and "Jimmie Jones." After a long hiatus, The Vapors reunited in 2016, performing live shows and releasing new material, including their 2020 album Together. Despite being often categorized as a one-hit wonder, The Vapors have retained a loyal fanbase and are celebrated for their contributions to the new wave movement.
