Space Monkeys
The Space Monkeys were a British alternative rock band that emerged in the mid-1990s, blending Madchester grooves with elements of trip hop and indie rock. Their sound was defined by jangly guitars, laid-back rhythms, and electronic flourishes—a nod to the legacy of bands like The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays. They gained some visibility with their debut album The Daddy of Them All, particularly the track “Sugar Cane,” which earned MTV and radio airplay in both the UK and US.
While their time in the spotlight was brief, the Space Monkeys encapsulated the transitional sound of post-Britpop UK music, bridging rave culture with guitar-driven alt-rock. Despite commercial challenges and label issues that cut their trajectory short, the band’s fusion of psychedelic energy and danceable beats remains a nostalgic touchstone for fans of the '90s indie scene.
