Scott McKenzie

Scott McKenzie was an American singer and songwriter best known for his 1967 hit single “San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair).” Born in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1939, McKenzie became a symbol of the 1960s counterculture movement with this song, which was written by his close friend and fellow musician John Phillips of The Mamas & the Papas. The song became an anthem for the “Summer of Love” in San Francisco and remains one of the most recognizable songs associated with the era. Its gentle melody and lyrics calling for peace and love perfectly captured the spirit of the time.

Although McKenzie never achieved the same level of success with subsequent releases, “San Francisco” ensured his place in music history. He continued to perform and record music throughout his life, albeit on a smaller scale. In his later years, McKenzie joined a reformed version of The Mamas & the Papas as a touring member, further solidifying his connection to the iconic 1960s music scene. Scott McKenzie passed away in 2012, but his contribution to the soundtrack of the 1960s and his role in the cultural revolution of that time continue to be remembered.
