Maceo & The Macks
Maceo & The Macks was a funk-driven ensemble led by saxophonist Maceo Parker, best known for his work with James Brown and the J.B.’s. Their most notable track, “Soul Power '74”, was a reworked instrumental version of Brown’s original “Soul Power,” and it became a breakbeat classic, heavily sampled in hip-hop and dance music. The group’s tight horn sections, driving rhythms, and deep grooves encapsulated the raw, energetic sound of ‘70s funk, making them a favorite among DJs and collectors.
Though they were a short-lived project, their contributions to funk and breakbeat culture were significant. Maceo Parker went on to have an extensive solo career, collaborating with artists like Prince, George Clinton, and countless others. His saxophone playing, honed during his time with James Brown, continued to be a defining sound in funk music. The influence of Maceo & The Macks lives on through their sampled beats and the enduring appeal of their grooves in hip-hop and beyond.
