Elvis Costello & The Attractions
Elvis Costello & The Attractions were one of the defining acts of the late 1970s and early ‘80s, combining punk energy with sharp, literate songwriting. Costello, born Declan McManus, emerged from the British pub rock scene before embracing the punk and new wave movements. Backed by The Attractions—Steve Nieve on keyboards, Bruce Thomas on bass, and Pete Thomas on drums—Costello delivered a series of groundbreaking albums, including This Year’s Model(1978) and Armed Forces (1979), filled with biting social commentary and infectious melodies.
Throughout the ‘80s, Costello experimented with different genres, from country (Almost Blue, 1981) to baroque pop (Imperial Bedroom, 1982). His witty, often acerbic lyricism and restless creativity made him one of the most respected songwriters of his generation. Though The Attractions disbanded in the mid-1990s, Costello continued a prolific solo career, collaborating with artists like Paul McCartney and Burt Bacharach. His work remains highly regarded, influencing countless songwriters and ensuring his place in the pantheon of rock’s greatest artists.
