Dire Straits

Dire Straits was a British rock band formed in 1977 by Mark Knopfler and his brother David Knopfler, along with John Illsley and Pick Withers. Known for their laid-back sound, intricate guitar work, and storytelling lyrics, Dire Straits rose to fame with their self-titled debut album, which featured the hit "Sultans of Swing." Their music, rooted in rock and blues, stood in contrast to the prevailing punk and new wave movements of the time.

The band’s global breakthrough came with the release of Brothers in Arms (1985), one of the best-selling albums of all time, featuring hits like "Money for Nothing" and "Walk of Life." Mark Knopfler’s distinctive fingerpicking guitar style became a signature element of their sound. Dire Straits disbanded in the mid-1990s, but their music continues to influence and inspire artists, and they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.
