Crash Test Dummies
Crash Test Dummies, a Canadian folk-rock band, rose to fame in the early 1990s with their deep, baritone-led sound. Formed in Winnipeg in 1988, the band was fronted by Brad Roberts, whose unmistakable voice became their signature. Their 1993 album God Shuffled His Feet catapulted them into international stardom, thanks in part to the hauntingly slow and surreal hit “Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm.” The song’s unusual storytelling and atmospheric sound made it one of the most recognizable tracks of the decade.
While their mainstream success waned in later years, Crash Test Dummies continued releasing music and touring, maintaining a dedicated fanbase. Their sound evolved to include elements of country, blues, and experimental folk, showcasing the band’s ability to adapt. Despite various lineup changes, Roberts and longtime band member Ellen Reid have kept the group’s spirit alive. Their later work, though less commercially dominant, remains critically respected for its depth, humor, and unique approach to songwriting.
