Charles Wright
Charles Wright is an American funk and soul musician best known as the leader of Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band. Born in 1940, Wright played a significant role in shaping the West Coast funk sound of the late 1960s and early 1970s. His band’s biggest hit, Express Yourself, became a funk anthem and was later heavily sampled in hip-hop music, most notably by N.W.A.
Wright’s music blended funk, R&B, and social consciousness, making his work both danceable and thought-provoking. Although he didn’t achieve the same mainstream success as some of his funk contemporaries, his contributions to music remain influential. His legacy continues through his recordings, which have been rediscovered by new generations of artists and listeners.
