Womack's early career began as a member of the Valentinos, a gospel group that transitioned to secular music under the mentorship of Sam Cooke. As a solo artist, he achieved success with hits like "Across 110th Street," which became one of his signature songs and was featured prominently in the film Jackie Brown.
