Al Bowlly
Al Bowlly was a Mozambican-born South African-British vocalist and jazz guitarist, highly regarded for his smooth, emotive voice that charmed audiences during the 1930s. Born on January 7, 1898, in Lourenço Marques, Mozambique, Bowlly moved to London, where he rose to fame as a crooner with a string of popular hits such as "The Very Thought of You," "Guilty," and "Love Is the Sweetest Thing."
His collaborations with bandleaders like Ray Noble and Lew Stone were particularly successful, making him a star on both sides of the Atlantic. Tragically, his career was cut short when he died on April 17, 1941, during a German bombing raid in London during World War II, but his music continues to be celebrated for its timeless charm and emotional depth.
