Formed in the late 1980s alongside Teddy Riley and Timmy Gatling (later replaced by Hall's brother, Damion Hall), Guy pioneered the new jack swing genre, blending R&B, hip-hop, and funk into a groundbreaking sound. The group's self-titled debut album, released in 1988, spawned hits like "Groove Me" and "I Like," establishing them as a dominant force in contemporary R&B.
