A Guy Called Gerald

A Guy Called Gerald, born Gerald Simpson in Manchester, is a pioneering electronic producer best known for his contributions to acid house and jungle music. Emerging from the late 1980s dance scene, he played a crucial role in shaping the UK’s electronic music landscape. His 1988 track Voodoo Ray became one of the first acid house anthems to emerge from the UK, defining the sound of Manchester’s underground rave culture. As an early member of 808 State, he also contributed to their influential album Newbuild before embarking on a successful solo career.

In the 1990s, Gerald was instrumental in the development of jungle and drum and bass, helping to push breakbeat-driven music into new, innovative territories. His album Black Secret Technology (1995) is often cited as one of the most forward-thinking jungle records of its time, blending intricate rhythms with deep, atmospheric textures. Despite not always receiving the same mainstream recognition as some of his peers, A Guy Called Gerald remains a deeply respected figure in electronic music, known for his independence and refusal to conform to industry expectations.
