Fisherman's Friends
Fisherman’s Friends are a British folk singing group from Port Isaac, Cornwall, known for their rousing performances of traditional sea shanties and maritime songs. Formed in the 1990s, the group originally consisted of a group of fishermen, lifeboatmen, and local tradesmen who would gather to sing for fun. Their deep, powerful harmonies and authentic, unaccompanied style have earned them a loyal following. In 2010, they gained national recognition after signing a major record deal, leading to chart success and widespread acclaim.
Their story inspired the 2019 film Fisherman’s Friends, which dramatized their rise to fame, as well as a subsequent musical adaptation. Despite personal losses and challenges over the years, the group continues to perform at festivals and concerts, keeping the spirit of traditional sea shanties alive. Their music, rooted in Cornwall’s rich maritime heritage, has helped to revive interest in folk singing, bringing an old tradition to new audiences worldwide.
