808 State

808 State are a pioneering electronic group from Manchester, known for their innovative contributions to acid house, techno, and ambient music. Formed in 1987 by Graham Massey, Martin Price, and Gerald Simpson (who left after their early releases), the group was instrumental in defining the UK’s electronic music scene. Their breakthrough came with the 1989 album Ninety, featuring the iconic track Pacific State, which became a defining anthem of the rave era, blending lush synths with jazzy saxophone lines.

Throughout the 1990s, 808 State continued to push electronic music forward, releasing albums such as ex:el (1991), which featured collaborations with Björk and Bernard Sumner, and Gorgeous (1993), incorporating elements of breakbeat and ambient music. Unlike many of their contemporaries, they managed to balance underground credibility with mainstream success, influencing future generations of electronic producers. Their ability to evolve and experiment while staying true to their roots has ensured their place as one of the most important acts in UK dance music history.
